STUDENTS COMPETE AT NATIONALS

      Upper Valley JVS  is pleased to announce that Alexandra Beigel, a student in the school’s satellite Computer Information Systems (CIS) program at Sidney High School, placed tenth in the Business Professionals of America (BPA) C++ Programming national competition.  This event was held at the organization’s annual National Leadership Conference in Washington, DC from May 4-8.  Beigel and six other JVS students earned the opportunity to compete at this level by placing in one of the top spots at the state BPA competition in March.
     
Beigel, daughter of Jeff and Lorie Beigel, will be a senior at Sidney High School in the fall.  She was eligible to compete at nationals after placing 2nd and 1st in the region and state competitions, respectively.  Also competing at the national level from the CIS program were Justin Decker, Blair Wilson and Benjamin Winks.  Decker also competed in the C++ Programming event; he is a 2011 graduate of Sidney High School.  Wilson competed in the Database Applications event and Winks in the Fundamentals of Web Design contest.  Both will be seniors at Sidney High School in the fall.   Decker is the son of John Decker and Denise Bristow.  Wilson’s parents are Tyler and Pam Wilson, and Winks is the son Scott and KellyWinks.
     
Melanie Mescher, a Fort Loramie student who completed the Business and Financial Management program at the JVS, also competed at nationals in the Advanced Spreadsheet contest.  She is a 2011 graduate and the daughter of Robert and Azile Mescher.  This is the second year for Mescher to compete at the national level.

Upper Valley Computer Information Technology senior Zachary Richards competed in the Visual Basic Programming event.  He is a 2011 graduate of Jackson Center High School, and his parents are James and Marcy Preston.
 Kyle Deal, a student in the JVS’s satellite Information Technology program at Troy High School, also competed at the national level in the JAVA Programming contest.  He is the son of Steve and Judy Deal and will be a senior next year. 
     
While in DC, the group attended conference sessions and participated in officer election activities.  They also had an opportunity to see the city’s sights and enjoy the museums and history featured by the city.
     
The theme for this year’s conference was “Stand Out from The Crowd” and was the culmination of a year’s business and information technology workforce education and training.
Business Professionals of America is a national organization for high school, college and middle school students preparing for careers in business and information technology occupations.  The organization’s activities and programs complement classroom instruction by giving students practical experience through application of the skills learned at school.  Business Professionals of America acts as a cohesive agent in the nationwide networking of education and business and industry, and is contributing to the preparation of a world-class workforce through the advancement of leadership, citizenship, academic and technological skills.
      
Troy High School Information Technology instructor Sue Phillis from Troy and Sidney High School CIS instructor Joe Spangler of Sidney also accompanied the students to DC and serve as a BPA advisor for JVS programs.
