Upper Valley JVS Honors Seniors at Convocation
Upper Valley JVS’s 340 seniors made their final appearance at the school's 36th annual Convocation on Thursday, May 26, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. at the Hobart Arena, Troy. The seniors, representing 14 associate schools and several open-enrollment schools and from 30 different career technical programs, each received a Certificate of Career Technical Achievement with Honors, a Certificate of Career Technical Achievement, a Career Technical Certificate, or a Record of Participation.
Brittany Phillips, Student Senate President and Interactive Media major from Piqua, led the Pledge of Allegiance. She also welcomed everyone to Convocation and introduced special guests.
Margee Zimpher, JVS Board of Education President from the Piqua Board of Education offered the graduates her congratulations and best wishes.
Director Michael Shellabarger presided at the Convocation. Assisting him were Superintendent Dr. Nancy Luce; and Administrators Carol Baer, Eric Bowser, Gene Cordonnier, Joe Davis, Deb Holthaus, Stephanie Johnson, Terry Krogman, Rob O’Leary, Bill Overla and Randy Smith.
High School faculty members presented seniors with their Certificates.
The top JVS students are Katelynn Sherman who earned a 4.0 grade point average and Gregory Westfall with a 3.775. Sherman, daughter of Michael and Wendy Sherman of Piqua, is enrolled in the Landscape Management program. Westfall is the son of Sean & Julie Westfall of Russia and is a Chef Training major.

AWARD OF MERIT—The Award of Merit is granted by the State Board of Education. GOODRICH-CORPORATION SCHOLARSHIP—Goodrich Corporation of Troy established the Goodrich Corporation Scholarship Fund to motivate career-technical students at Upper Valley JVS to pursue college-level studies in the natural sciences and fields related to manufacturing. The JVS recipients this year received a $750 Goodrich Corporation Scholarship each. The 2011 recipients were:
Katelynn Sherman, a Landscape Management major from Piqua Christian and Rebecca Stiefel, a Medical Technologies major from Piqua.
AMBER DETRICK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – The Amber Detrick Memorial Early Childhood Scholarship has been established in memory of Amber Detrick, an Early Childhood Education student, she was an active member of FCCLA and a member of the Upper Valley JVS Class of 2009. This scholarship is awarded to a student who is continuing his/her study in the field of education. The winner of this scholarship is Amanda Kessler, an Early Childhood Education major from Ft. Loramie.
LAURA MATSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – The Laura Matson Memorial Scholarship has been established in honor of the contributions she made to the field of culinary arts. She was a skilled teacher and talented pastry chef. In addition to sharing her skills, she touched the lives of her Chef Training students with her warm and patient disposition. The scholarship was designed for students who wish to continue the study of culinary arts at a post secondary institution. Skip Ekhart and Laura’s children Cody and Parker Matson presented the scholarship to Courtney Layman of Bradford.
SHARON WEYANT SCHOLARSHIP—The Sharon Weyant Scholarship has been established in honor of her contributions to the students of Troy High School and the entire Troy community. Weyant served as a Family and Consumer Science Satellite instructor for Upper Valley JVS and was an active FCCLA advisor. Her husband Randy Weyant presented the scholarship to Amanda Bell, a Culinary Arts student from Troy High School.
AWARDS OF DISTINCTION
The Upper Valley JVS Award of Distinction is presented to the Top 10% of students in each
Career-Technical program. Criteria for the Award of Distinction include grade point average, career
technical skill proficiencies and school activities. Mrs. Margee Zimpher, JVS Board of Education President presented the Awards of Distinction to the graduates.

Each year, the Upper Valley JVS recognized extra effort on the part of an individual, business, industry or agency. These organizations and individuals have shared their time, talent and resources to improve career technical and tech prep education opportunities for JVS students. Also, earning special recognition was 2010 Auto Collision Repair graduate Wyatt Knick. Knick is from Bradford and is the school’s first SkillsUSA national champion. He placed first in the Auto Refinishing Technology competition that was held in Kansas City, Missouri, last summer. Dr. Richard N. Adams, founding superintendent of Upper Valley JVS who is currently serving as the 79th District State Representative to the Ohio House of Representatives, recognized Knick for this accomplishment with a proclamation.
