JVS Students Attend Skills Ohio Championships

The 2010 SkillsUSA Ohio State Conference gathered nearly 3,000 members and advisors from Career Technical school programs throughout Ohio, including 45 members from the Upper Valley JVS SkillsUSA Chapter. This annual event of Ohio SkillsUSA was held in Columbus on April 23 and 24.

The Skills Ohio championships consist of 81 technical and leadership competitions. Participants are challenged to complete a project in their area of technical training within a specified time period while being scored by a panel of judges from business, industry and education. Top qualifiers will compete for national honors in the SkillsUSA championships in Kansas City, Missouri, from June 21-26.

Over 2,000 Ohio SkillsUSA members competed for the gold, silver, and bronze medallions awarded to the top three finishers in each contest area. Competition begins at the local level with winning members having the opportunity to progress to regional, state, national and international competitions.

Five Upper Valley JVS students placed in the top three positions at this year’s state competition. Eric Mayberry, Houston, a senior in the HVAC/R (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration) program received a gold medal in the Sheet Metal competition. Cierra Woodard, a Houston senior in Cosmetology, competed in the Nail Care competition and also finished with a first place gold medallion. Also competing was Wyatt Knick, Bradford, a senior in Auto Collision Repair earned a first place gold award in the area of Auto Refinishing.

Andrew Epperson and Jordan Lacey also competed and both earned third place bronze medallions. Epperson, a Houston senior in the Electricity program competed in the Industrial Motor Control contest; and Lacey, Troy, a senior in graphic arts competed in the area of Graphics Communications.

At the conference, Adrian Helton, a junior in the CADD (Computer Assisted Drafting and Design) program was elected to the position of SkillsUSA Ohio Ambassador.
