STUDENTS WIN IN PERFECT ATTENDANCE DRAWING
For the eighteenth year, Upper Valley JVS students have been rewarded for coming to school every day, all year. Students with one and two-year perfect attendance were eligible to win a car or other prizes donated by local businesses because of their excellent attendance. The drawing was held at the Upper Valley JVS Applied Tech Center on Thursday, May 19 at 10:30 a.m.
The keys and title to a white 1993 Buick Century were given to Andrew Shellabarger from Piqua. He is the son of Steven Shellabarger. His name was drawn from a pool of forty-five students who had perfect attendance this school year. The car was donated by Paul Sherry Chrysler Dodge & Jeep of Piqua. Dave "Scoop" Curtis of Paul Sherry was on hand to assist with the drawing.
The second place prize was an Asus laptop computer valued at over $300 donated by the Upper Valley JVS administrators. The winner of the computer was Carlene Price of Troy, daughter of Jill Riffell.
Student attendance continues to be a priority at Upper Valley. Principal Joe Davis shares that "We encourage students to make every attempt to get to school each day and motivate themselves to do so. The ultimate payoff could be a car."
The winner was determined by a reverse raffle. The first name drawn won a prize, but not the car. Every name drawn thereafter also won one of several donated prizes. When only ten names remained, these students were asked to stand. They sat as their name was drawn.
When two names were left, two sets of keys were put in the "fish bowl." One set would start the car; the other would not. The student whose name was drawn next chose a set of keys. The other student was given the remaining set. The student with the key that started the car won the car. The other student received the computer.
The third place winner, Kylie Hopkins, of Sidney, was awarded an AAA Plus/RV Membership from AAA of Piqua presented by Jackie Shinall.
Other top prizes included a $100 Series EE Savings Bond from Unity National Bank; a Fuji digital camera from Meijer, and two $50 checks from the Piqua American Legion Post 184.
The following students had perfect attendance for the year and were eligible for the perfect attendance drawing.
